Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized the United States’ reported plan to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, arguing that Western nations should not offer further concessions to Moscow without reciprocal steps from Russia.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of an informal meeting of European Union leaders in Cyprus on April 24, 2026, Meloni said the current moment does not call for concessions to Moscow but rather for increased pressure on Russian leadership to make its own compromises.

She argued that Western countries, particularly the United States, have already taken multiple steps toward engagement with Russia in recent months without receiving equivalent responses in return and that it is now time to expect reciprocal measures from Moscow rather than offering further concessions.

Meloni stressed that efforts should focus on encouraging Russia to take constructive steps forward, adding that the lack of balance in recent diplomatic moves underscores the need for a firmer approach.

The Italian prime minister’s remarks came after a U.S. Official confirmed on April 23 that the United States will invite Putin to the G20 summit in Miami, which it is hosting in December 2026 as the current G20 presidency holder.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed doubt that Putin would attend, stating he doubted his counterpart would come, while adding that if Putin did attend, it would be “probably very helpful.”

Trump also renewed criticism of former President Barack Obama for expelling Russia from the G8 following its 2014 invasion of Ukraine, saying Putin was “very offended by that – rightfully.”

The U.S. Had previously welcomed Putin to Alaska in August 2025, marking the first time the Russian leader had set foot on Western soil since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has sought to revive long-frozen relations with Russia in an effort to end the war in Ukraine, a policy that has drawn concern from European allies over potential concessions to Moscow.

Meloni’s criticism reflects broader unease among NATO members about the direction of U.S. Foreign policy under Trump, particularly regarding engagement with Russia without clear concessions on Ukraine or other security issues.
