Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted on Thursday that European countries bear responsibility for the continuation of the war in Ukraine, despite numerous attempts at a peaceful resolution. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin accused European nations of pursuing a policy of “constant escalation” that undermined peace efforts.

Putin referenced previous mediation attempts, including those by former US President Donald Trump. Trump reportedly expressed disappointment with Putin, stating the Russian leader could have ended the conflict if he had chosen to do so. Reuters reported on Trump’s comments on October 25, 2023.

Currently, Russia maintains its maximalist demands in negotiations with ukraine. Thes include a guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO, adn also relinquishing control of Ukrainian territory.

Putin’s Concerns Over European Military Expansion

Putin also addressed the increasing military capabilities of European nations, specifically citing Germany’s ambition to have the strongest army in Europe. He stated, “We are observing the ever-greater militarization of Europe.” He added, “In Germany, for example, the German army should be the strongest in Europe. So be it. We hear what is meant,” and warned that Russia’s response “will not be long in coming,” though he provided no specifics.
