Putin Open to Talks with Trump, Claims Russia Holds Upper Hand in ukraine
Moscow, Russia - Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed willingness to engage in discussions with President-elect Donald Trump ”at any time,” responding to Trump’s recent pronouncements about brokering a peace deal in Ukraine.
Speaking at his annual end-of-year press conference, a rare prospect for Russian journalists and citizens to directly question the president, Putin stated, “I don’t know when I will see him. He hasn’t said anything about it. It’s been more then four years since I last spoke with him. I am prepared for it, of course. At any time.”
Putin, who has led russia for over two decades, acknowledged the war’s toll, saying, “These three years… of course, were a serious test for all of us, for the whole country and for me…I started joking less, and almost stopped laughing.”
However, he asserted that Russian forces maintain control on the battlefield and expressed regret for not launching the offensive sooner.
When asked about potential concessions to Trump, Putin dismissed the notion of russia being in a weakened position, claiming the country has grown stronger since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“We have always said that we are ready to negotiate and reach compromises,” Putin stated. “The problem is that the other side, both literally and figuratively, refuses to negotiate…”
He emphasized the progress of Russian forces, asserting they are advancing towards their primary objectives in Ukraine.
“Soon ther will be no Ukrainians who want to fight,” Putin declared. “In my opinion, soon there will be no one left who wants to fight. We are ready, but the other side has to be ready both to negotiate and to make compromises…”
“We don’t need a truce, we need peace, long-term, secured with guarantees for the Russian Federation and its citizens,” he concluded.
