Putin Says Israel Biggest Winner in Syria Crisis
Putin: Israel Biggest Beneficiary of Syrian Crisis, Condemns Golan Occupation
Moscow – Russian president Vladimir Putin asserted Thursday that Israel is the primary beneficiary of the ongoing crisis in Syria, strongly condemning the jewish state’s occupation of the Golan Heights.
Speaking at his annual end-of-year press conference, Putin acknowledged Israel’s security concerns but emphasized Russia’s opposition to any territorial seizures in Syria. This condemnation comes in the wake of recent Israeli military advancements into the Golan Heights and surrounding areas.
“One can have any stance on Israel’s actions, but Russia condemns the seizure of any Syrian territory. This is clear. Our position here is firm,” Putin stated.
While recognizing Israel’s efforts to address its national security concerns, Putin expressed hope that Israel would eventually withdraw its forces from Syrian territory. Though, he noted that current actions suggest the opposite.
“Instead,Israel is sending more troops across the border and voicing concerns that they not only have no intention of leaving but are planning to occupy the Golan Heights,” putin said.
He pointed to recent requests from local residents to be annexed by Israel as further evidence of the complex situation.Putin stressed that the question of Syria’s disintegration must be resolved in accordance with the UN Charter, which upholds the right of nations to self-determination.
Following the collapse of the Assad regime, Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes against Syrian ports, airfields, and weapons depots, while also pushing its forces beyond the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has justified these actions, stating that his government cannot allow militant groups to fill the vacuum on Syria’s border and threaten Israeli communities in the Golan Heights.Since then, the Israeli government has approved plans to double the Jewish population in the Golan Heights and strengthen its hold on the region.
“We will continue to defend it, develop it, and settle it,” a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office declared.
