Russian authorities have significantly expanded the air defense network surrounding President Vladimir Putin’s residence in Valday, Novgorod region, following an increase in drone attacks by Ukraine.

According to reports from Radio Liberty and Ukrinform, seven new towers equipped with Pantsir air defense systems were constructed around the residence in March 2026. Satellite imagery from Planet.com indicates that construction for all seven towers began on March 17, 2026, and some of these positions have already been equipped with anti-aircraft missile systems.

Strategic Layout and Capacity

The air defense systems are organized into two concentric rings around the residence, with a larger outer ring and a smaller inner ring. With the addition of the March 2026 constructions, the total number of air defense systems surrounding the Valday residence has reached 27.

This represents a substantial increase in security over a short period. In August 2025, reports indicated there were 12 Pantsir-S1 systems in the area, a sharp rise from only two systems recorded between January 2023 and July 2024.

The Valday Residence and Security Context

The residence is located within the Valdai national park north of Moscow, situated on a peninsula between two lakes. The 40-hectare grounds are fenced off from the park and surrounded by water on three sides, with severely restricted access.

The Valday Residence and Security Context

The facility serves as a high-profile location where Vladimir Putin spends time during the summer. Reports indicate the site includes a replica of his Kremlin office and is frequently visited by Alina Kabaeva and Putin’s sons.

The deployment of the Pantsir-S1 systems is specifically aimed at combating drones and short-range cruise missiles. This fortification is viewed as a response to Ukraine’s developing capability to strike targets deeper inside Russian territory.

Broader Defensive Trends

The reinforcement of the Valday residence mirrors other security upgrades across Russia. In the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan—a site used for the manufacture of Geran UAVs, which are modified versions of Iranian Shaheds—more than 20 towers with large-caliber machine guns and several Pantsir platforms have been erected.

The rapid scaling of defenses around the presidential residence highlights a perceived vulnerability in the protection of strategic Russian objects. While Moscow and the Valday residence have seen heavy concentrations of air defense, other strategic sites have lacked similar levels of protection.

The current security posture at Valday follows a trajectory of steady escalation: from the first recorded Pantsir-S1 in January 2023 to 12 systems by August 2025, and finally to 27 systems by April 2026.
