Updated June ⁣05, 2025

Tensions between‍ russia and Ukraine are escalating after a series of Ukrainian drone⁢ attacks on Russian soil. president Vladimir Putin informed ‌former U.S. President donald Trump that Russia would be forced to respond to⁣ these ‌actions, which included attacks on Russia’s⁢ nuclear-capable ‍bomber fleet and a bridge bombing that Moscow attributes ⁢to Kyiv.

The⁤ conflict in Ukraine has intensified⁣ despite Trump’s repeated ⁤calls for peace. After Ukraine’s attacks on bridges and Russian bombers, Putin expressed doubt that Ukraine’s leaders genuinely desire peace. Trump confirmed a ⁢phone conversation with Putin, lasting over an hour, were they discussed the attacks‍ and Iran.

“We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various othre attacks that have been taking place by both sides,” Trump stated on social media. “It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.”

Putin reportedly told Trump “very strongly, ‌that he ⁤will have to respond to the ⁣recent attack on the⁣ airfields,” Trump said, adding that he hoped Putin could assist in negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Trump believes Putin ⁤shares Washington’s view that Iran “cannot have a⁤ nuclear weapon.”

Moscow has demanded that the United States and‍ Britain restrain Ukraine, notably after the⁢ attacks on Russian bombers. The Kremlin indicated that Trump claimed Washington had no prior knowledge of the Ukrainian attacks. Trump’s Ukraine envoy suggested ‍the risk of escalation is‌ “going way up” following the⁣ strikes.

Russia and the United⁤ States possess the largest nuclear arsenals globally, holding approximately ‍88% of all nuclear weapons. An attack on any part of Russia’s “triad” of nuclear capabilities—strategic bombers, ⁢land-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles, and submarine-launched ballistic⁣ missiles—is considered a severe ⁢escalation.

Putin has accused Ukrainian leadership of being a “terrorist organization” supported by “terrorist accomplices,” citing‍ the bridge attacks as directed ‍against‌ civilians.⁢ “The ‍current Kyiv regime does⁣ not need peace at all,” Putin⁤ said. “What is there to talk about? How can ⁣we negotiate with⁢ those who rely on terror?”

ukraine has not commented on the bridge attacks. Both Kyiv and Moscow deny targeting‍ civilians, tho civilian casualties have occurred on⁢ both sides. Russia maintains that certain conditions⁤ must be met⁣ before⁣ a ceasefire can be considered.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov urged⁢ London and ⁣Washington to prevent further escalation. British and⁤ U.S. officials have⁣ stated they had no prior knowledge‌ of the attacks on Russian nuclear-capable bombers. ‌The⁢ White House confirmed Trump was not informed of Ukraine’s drone attack⁢ beforehand.

What’s ⁣next

The international community watches closely ⁣as Russia‍ considers its ‌response, with concerns ‍mounting over⁤ further escalation of⁣ the conflict and the potential impact on global security.
