Moscow’s‌ leadership‌ is unlikely to yield to pressure, signaling a hardening of stance and a setback for those hoping for a thaw in⁤ US-Russia relations.

Moscow, Russia -‍ The 50-day ultimatum issued by former US President ‌Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in ⁤Ukraine has been met with‌ a firm rejection, according to Russian foreign policy analysts and former ‌Kremlin officials. Far from forcing a de-escalation, the ultimatum‌ appears to have solidified Putin’s resolve, potentially pushing‌ Russia to double down on its war efforts and signaling the end of an initial,⁤ more conciliatory phase in US-Russia relations⁢ under Trump.

No ⁣response ⁣to Pressure: The Kremlin’s Stance

Fyodor Lukyanov, a prominent Russian foreign policy analyst‌ and head of a council advising the Kremlin, stated that the Russian leadership does not respond to pressure. ⁤”Most likely, we can say‍ that the‍ first phase of⁣ US-Russia‌ relations under trump, which⁣ lasted about six months, has come to‌ an end,” Lukyanov commented.

A⁢ former Kremlin official source⁢ echoed this sentiment, describing Putin as “obsessed” ⁢with projecting strength and making it highly unlikely that he would soften his stance in the face of Trump’s threats. This unwavering position is seen as especially detrimental⁣ to a small, ‌increasingly isolated faction within the Russian elite that had harbored hopes for a rapprochement with⁢ Washington. ⁢Such ‍a thaw was anticipated to bring a ⁣notable economic boost and ⁣potentially ease existing sanctions.

Fading hopes for Rapprochement

Some within the ‍Russian elite had viewed Trump’s apparent admiration for ⁣President Putin as ‌a potential turning point. They envisioned this as an opportunity to lift sanctions, ‌revive Western business ties, initiate new arms control negotiations,‌ and ultimately reshape⁣ Europe’s power dynamics to Moscow’s advantage.

Simultaneously occurring, ⁣among ordinary Russians, there appeared to be a genuine desire to end the conflict. Public opinion polls indicated a sharp rise‌ in support⁣ for⁢ halting ⁢the fighting, a trend⁢ that⁣ coincided⁣ with growing approval of the United States. ⁢the primary⁢ condition for this potential opening was ‌Putin’s ‍agreement to a⁢ ceasefire⁢ in Ukraine that would effectively freeze⁤ the frontlines.‍ This would allow Russia to retain occupied territories, thereby eliminating any realistic prospect of⁢ Kyiv reclaiming them.

However, political analyst Stanovaya‌ noted that while “some frustration in certain Moscow circles” exists over the deteriorating relationship with the US, those ⁤who prioritized better ties⁢ with Washington⁢ over the war in ‌Ukraine held minimal political sway or⁣ influence.

putin’s⁣ Unyielding Demands

As anticipated by those‌ who have closely observed Putin’s actions, he rejected Trump’s terms for peace. Instead, he reaffirmed‌ his sweeping demands, which are aimed at dismantling‌ Ukraine’s sovereignty. These demands include a legally binding promise that NATO will ‍not expand⁣ eastward, Ukraine’s ‌neutrality, a cap on the country’s‍ armed forces, protection for Russian ⁢speakers residing in⁢ Ukraine,⁤ and the acceptance of Russia’s territorial gains.

The former Kremlin official emphasized the immense human‌ cost of the conflict, stating, “Over 100,000 Russians died in this war. putin simply cannot ‍come home with anything less than what can be seen as a real victory.”

The Rise ‌of a Militant⁤ Faction

This hardening of stance‍ suggests that a more militant and confrontational faction within Moscow’s elite⁣ is regaining influence. This group views a clash ⁤with the United States not merely as likely, but ‌as unavoidable.

Alexander Dugin,a prominent far-right Russian ideologue, articulated this perspective⁣ on Telegram, writing,”Don’t forget: we see ‌the United ⁢states not as ⁤a neutral⁣ arbiter, but as a party to ⁣the war against us ⁤in Ukraine. You supply⁣ the weapons that allow ‌our enemies to keep fighting. So yes, ⁢the US⁤ is at ⁣war with us.” He concluded, “Putin gave Trump‌ time to change that. Time is running out.”
