Putin’s India Visit: Strengthening Defense Ties Amidst Geopolitical Shifts
New Delhi, india – As President Vladimir Putin embarks on a two-day state visit to India, the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit promises to be a pivotal moment for the two nations’ defense cooperation. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra modi,Putin’s visit underscores the enduring strategic partnership between India adn Russia, even as global dynamics evolve.
At the forefront of discussions will be the potential supply of advanced Russian military hardware to India, including the highly sought-after Su-57 stealth fighter jets and additional S-400 air defense units. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Su-57 issue would be on the agenda, signaling Russia’s willingness to explore manufacturing the stealth fighter jets in india.Teams have already visited Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) Aircraft Manufacturing Division in Nashik to assess feasibility. The Nashik facility, with its extensive experience in producing Soviet- and Russian-origin jets, presents a viable option for co-production.
The S-400 air defense system, already a crucial component of India’s defense capabilities, is also expected to be a key topic. Peskov emphasized the importance of this issue, stating that discussions would occur at the highest level. Despite delays in delivery due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has ramped up its military industry production to meet both domestic and export demands.
Defense secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh affirmed India’s commitment to its long-standing defense cooperation with Russia. He emphasized that India follows a policy of strategic autonomy, procuring equipment from both russia and the United States to diversify its sources of supply. Maintenance and support for the existing Russian legacy equipment, and also the remaining S-400 systems, will also be addressed during the visit.
The S-400’s effectiveness was recently demonstrated during operation Sindoor, where it successfully engaged a target at a distance of over 300 kilometers, showcasing its long-range capabilities.
Beyond hardware, technology transfer is another critical area of cooperation. Discussions are underway regarding the transfer of technology for military jet engines, a capability gap that india seeks to address. While some technologies may remain restricted, Russia has expressed its willingness to share as much as possible with its Indian partners.
Despite a decline in Russia’s share of India’s arms imports over the past 15 years, it remains the contry’s largest supplier, accounting for 36% of major arms imports. This visit signals a strong intent to reinforce defense engagements and explore new avenues for collaboration, ensuring the continued strength of the India-Russia strategic partnership.
