Expert: Kremlin Infighting Fuels Attacks Amid Ukraine Peace Talks

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine, including a deadly missile strike ‍in April, followed the commencement of ⁢U.S.-led peace initiatives, according to military analyst Oleg Zhdanov. He suggests internal conflict within ‍the Russian ⁢leadership is a key ‍factor.

Bloody Attacks Linked to Kremlin Power struggle

Zhdanov believes the surge in violence during purported peace negotiations reflects a power struggle within the Kremlin. He argues that disagreements among russia’s political elite are directly contributing to the suffering ‍of Ukrainian civilians.

Zhdanov noted a⁣ correlation between diplomatic efforts and intensified attacks. “As soon as U.S.President Steve Witkoff’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, meets with Putin, the very next day we see‍ a terrorist act against the civilian population with a maximum number of victims,” Zhdanov said.

Trump’s “Mistake” Remark on Deadly‍ Strike

Zhdanov referenced⁤ former President Donald Trump’s reaction to a Russian missile strike that killed 34 people. Trump reportedly called it a “terrible⁣ mistake.”

“The claim that the Russians mistakenly targeted a ‍military site is baseless,” Zhdanov stated. “Given the precision of⁤ the Iskander-M ballistic missile, such errors‍ are highly improbable.Trump’s assertion ⁣that it was a mistake echoes Putin’s narrative.”

⁣ Zhdanov elaborated on the dynamics within the Russian goverment: “Whenever the so-called liberal faction,⁣ represented by Dmitriev and those close to putin, initiates negotiations, a bloody attack occurs. This⁣ demonstrates that hardliners like Patrushev and Shoigu are influencing the war’s trajectory and⁣ undermining any potential agreements. While Lavrov attempts diplomacy in Istanbul, Dmitriev is reportedly close to securing deals on aviation and embassy reopenings. This situation⁣ reveals a⁤ political‍ confrontation among Russian Federation clans.”

Putin’s Control Over Russia in Question

‍ Zhdanov suggests the escalating attacks raise questions about President Vladimir Putin’s control over the situation within Russia.

“Putin might be open to a pause in ⁤operations, wich he ⁢desperately needs. However, we cannot definitively ⁣determine his position. We can only speculate that he sides with the liberals regarding⁤ an ⁣operational pause. We anticipate that this will led to a confrontation between kremlin factions, perhaps destabilizing Russia itself,” Zhdanov said.

⁤ He added that Putin might not oppose Trump’s peace initiatives. “Dmitriev’s active ⁣promotion of ceasefire agreements and restored diplomatic relations suggests he has authority. this raises the question of whether Putin is truly in control or if a powerful liberal ⁢faction is disregarding him.”

Trump’s Limited Influence

Zhdanov believes Trump lacks the ability to influence Putin and halt the conflict in Ukraine.

⁣ ⁤ “Trump’s behavior indicates he is not an independent actor in settlement negotiations.‍ His initial reaction to the strike, calling ‍it a ‘mistake,’ is telling. Missile launches require ‍precise calculations from multiple brigades. The idea that two brigades simultaneously made the same error is absurd. When questioned about the ‘mistake,’ ⁣trump deflected, stating, ‘This is not my war, this is Biden’s war.’ This demonstrates his inability to act against Russia or Putin,” Zhdanov explained.

He further speculated about potential leverage held over Trump: “Perhaps a ‘Trump’ file is not in Putin’s possession, but rather held by Patrushev or Bortnikov of the⁤ FSB. Dmitriev’s negotiation level is considerably higher, engaging directly with Trump, while Lavrov negotiates with the Biden governance. Whether dmitriev acts on Putin’s behalf remains uncertain. As Churchill⁢ said,⁢ ‘You will talk to those who emerge from the Russian serpentarium.’ It’s best to avoid interfering in their internal power struggles.”

Continued Attacks Expected

‍ ⁤ zhdanov anticipates continued attacks on civilians. He stressed the importance of heeding air raid sirens and urging international partners to provide ⁤defensive weaponry.

⁤ “Increased discord within the Kremlin will likely result in more attacks. We urge the public to remain vigilant and heed air raid warnings. We⁣ continue to appeal to our partners for weapons to protect against ⁢Russian aggression. Despite President zelenskyy’s ⁢request for five divisions of air defense ⁣batteries, it is unlikely we will receive the ‍necessary 30-40 batteries to adequately protect⁢ our airspace⁤ in the immediate future,” Zhdanov concluded.

Previous reports have detailed international condemnation of the April missile strike. While European nations have expressed outrage, the U.S. president has yet to issue a strong condemnation of Russia.
