Putin’s Revised Nuclear Doctrine: Conditions for Potential Use of Nuclear Weapons
Putin Approves Updated Nuclear Doctrine for Russia
Vladimir Putin has approved an updated nuclear doctrine, according to Sky News. This new policy states that Russia may consider using nuclear weapons if subjected to a missile attack supported by a nuclear power. This response appears to target the Biden administration’s decision that allowed Ukraine to launch American long-range missiles into Russian territory. Moscow described this move as “reckless” and warned of a strong response.
The updated doctrine outlines threats that could prompt the Russian leadership to consider a nuclear strike. It includes attacks from conventional missiles, drones, or other aerial vehicles as qualifying threats.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine 1000 days ago, the Kremlin has frequently warned that the West is testing the limits of Russia’s tolerance regarding nuclear capabilities.
In September, Putin asserted that Western approval for Ukraine to use long-range missiles would signify direct involvement from NATO, the U.S., and European countries in the conflict. He emphasized that NATO’s military infrastructure and personnel would need to engage in the targeting and launching of these missiles.
