key Highlights
India’s passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales rose by 20% in November 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, reaching 394,152 units, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported on December 11, 2023. This growth follows sustained consumer interest even after the festive season and is attributed to recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar stated that demand was bolstered by GST benefits, the ongoing marriage season, improved availability of previously high-demand models, and consistent popularity of compact sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The improved supply chain led to a reduction in inventory, falling to 44-46 days from 53-55 days in the previous month, signaling a healthier balance between supply and demand.
Segment Performance: A Mixed bag
While passenger vehicles thrived, other segments experienced varying results. Two-wheeler sales saw a 3% decline in November, and construction equipment sales decreased by 17%. However, commercial vehicle sales mirrored the PV growth with a 20% increase, three-wheelers rose by 24%, and tractors experienced a considerable 57% jump.
Despite being a post-festive month, total vehicle retail sales increased by 2.14% to 3.3 million units in November 2023 compared to November 2022, demonstrating overall market resilience.
