The New York Sirens considerably enhanced their offensive lineup in Tuesday’s PWHL draft, selecting Kristyna Kaltounkova and Casey O’Brien in the first round. The move aims to revitalize the team after losing key players in the expansion draft.
With the first overall pick, the Sirens chose Colgate forward Kristyna Kaltounkova. Shortly after, General Manager Pascal Daoust traded with the Toronto Sceptres to acquire the No. 3 pick, selecting Wisconsin center Casey O’Brien, the reigning MVP in women’s college hockey. The Sirens are betting big on thes two to improve their scoring.
Kaltounkova, a Czech Republic native, is the first European-born player to be drafted No. 1 in the PWHL. “Watching who’s on the roster, I’m just really excited to get started,” Kaltounkova said. “I’m happy to jump in and help out as much as I can and make an impact immediately.”
Daoust traded top defender Ella Shelton to Toronto for the Sceptres’ first and fourth-round picks (27th overall) in the eight-team, six-round draft. The Sirens needed to address their offense after losing Alex carpenter, jessie Eldridge, and goalie Corinne Schroeder to Seattle. Carpenter and Eldridge accounted for 20 of the Sirens’ 71 goals last season,highlighting the team’s scoring struggles.
“now we have more tools to play,” Daoust said. “We just felt that it was an opportunity for us to gear up and cover a new angle and we’re very happy with it.”
O’Brien expressed excitement about joining Sarah Fillier, last year’s top pick, stating, “Sarah is one of those players who I grew up hearing her name, and I’ve always been a really big fan of her game. I think we have similar vision and so I’d be honored if I got the opportunity to be her teammate.”
The Sirens also acquired Kristin O’Neill and the 28th pick from Montreal Victoire in exchange for Abby Roque.
The Boston Fleet selected Clarkson defenseman Haley Winn at No. 2, while Montreal drafted Nicole Gosling at No. 4. Boston GM Danielle Marmer noted Winn’s versatility,saying,”She can do absolutely everything and anything you need… If you think about who’s going to score goals for us, Haley Winn can be the answer.”
