Cara Gardner Morey to Lead Vancouver’s PWHL Team
Vancouver’s Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) team has named Cara Gardner Morey as its inaugural general manager. morey, formerly a successful coach at Princeton University, is eager to begin building a competitive team through upcoming player signings and drafts.
Gardner Morey’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process, with hundreds of candidates vying for the position in both Vancouver and Seattle, the league’s other expansion city. Jayna Hefford, PWHL’s executive vice president, cited Gardner Morey’s proven ability to build a high-level programme and her passion for the sport as key factors in her selection.
“It’s such a cool chance,” Gardner Morey said.”And I’m kind of chomping at the bit for June 4 when I can start making these calls and kind of talking to the players we’re interested in bringing to our franchise.”
During her tenure at Princeton, Gardner Morey led the team to an Ivy League championship and two NCAA quarterfinal appearances. She also served as an assistant coach for the canadian women’s U-18 team and during the Rivalry Series against the United States.
Gardner Morey envisions a Vancouver PWHL team characterized by speed, skill, and physicality, underpinned by a strong and competitive culture. She is already considering potential coaching staff and plotting the ideal roster.
“That’s what’s exciting about this position,right? Building your own team and this fantasy that you could almost choose anybody you wont,which we know that’s not quite the way it goes,” Gardner Morey said.
