Joe Pyfer is pushing back against the “fraud check” label applied to his first UFC loss, suggesting that Bo Nickal’s recent defeat is a more fitting example. Pyfer also addressed criticism he received after withdrawing from a fight in Mexico City.
Pyfer suffered his first UFC defeat against Jack hermansson last year. While some fans deemed it a “fraud check,” Pyfer disagrees. He argues that nickal’s knockout loss to Reinier de Ridder better exemplifies a true “fraud check.”

Speaking at UFC 316 Media Day, Pyfer said his performance against Hermansson wasn’t his best due to personal issues. He emphasized that he wasn’t knocked down or submitted, distinguishing it from Nickal’s finish.
“That was my first big show, my first big test and I walked into it not 100 per cent,” Pyfer said. “But I didn’t get rocked, I didn’t get dropped, I didn’t get submitted, I didn’t get ‘fraud checked’… if anybody got ‘fraud checked’ we can say it was Bo Nickal.”
Pyfer also addressed the backlash he faced after pulling out of his fight with Kelvin Gastelum in Mexico City.He defended his earlier comments expressing his dislike for competing in Mexico, citing negative experiences.
“I’ve never had to pull out of a fight,” he explained. “So it was very disheartening to see people be like ‘I hope the cartel kills you… Mexico is a s—hole and I’ll never go back and I won’t fight there.”
He recounted an incident where his coaches were allegedly targeted by police seeking bribes. Pyfer is scheduled to fight at UFC 316.
