DOHA, Qatar—UCC Holding and Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal, have initiated the printing phase of the 3D-Printed Schools Project, representing the largest 3D-printed construction growth globally. This aspiring project aims too construct 14 public schools, with two schools entirely built using cutting-edge 3D-printing technology. Each school spans 20,000 square meters, totaling 40,000 square meters.

To achieve this scale in 3D-printed construction, UCC Holding partnered with COBOD, a Danish leader in 3D construction printing, deploying two custom BODXL printers. Each printer measures 50 meters long, 30 meters wide, and 15 meters high, comparable to a Boeing 737 hangar, making them the largest construction printers ever created. Extensive planning preceded the launch, including site preparation, equipment assembly, and over 100 full-scale test prints. A dedicated UCC 3D construction team, including architects, engineers, material scientists, and printer technicians, spent eight months at a Doha trial site refining the process. They developed localized concrete mix designs, engineered custom print nozzles, and studied performance under Qatar’s extreme climate conditions.
In May, the team completed intensive training with COBOD engineers, mastering advanced techniques in print sequencing, structural layering, and real-time quality control. The 3D-printed schools project offers environmental and operational advantages over traditional methods. It reduces raw material waste and concrete usage, cutting carbon emissions. It also minimizes on-site noise, dust, and transportation needs, while accelerating construction timelines with round-the-clock automated printing.
To optimize performance and protect materials from Qatar’s intense daytime heat, printing operations are primarily scheduled at night, enhancing energy efficiency and worker safety.
