Qatar Airspace Closes Amid Iran threats; US Base Plays Key Role
Updated June 23, 2025
DOHA, Qatar – Qatar temporarily shut down its airspace Monday, following advisories from U.S. and British authorities urging their citizens within the country to shelter in place. The move comes amid heightened tensions and repeated threats from Iran to retaliate against the U.S. after strikes on its nuclear facilities.
The U.S. and U.K. announcements prompted numerous Doha-based institutions, including universities, to send messages to their employees and students. These messages followed Iran’s threats, raising concerns about potential attacks targeting American forces in the Middle East. Two U.S. officials suggested such attacks could occur soon, possibly within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Qatar is home to Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. base in the Middle East. This base serves as the forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command and houses approximately 10,000 troops. The base’s strategic role in regional security makes it a potential target.
The U.S. and British embassies in Qatar cited “an abundance of caution” for their recommendations, offering no further details. Qatar’s foreign minister stated on X, formerly Twitter, that the airspace closure was part of measures taken due to regional developments, without elaborating.
Earlier, Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari released a statement maintaining that the security situation in Qatar remained stable. This apparent mixed messaging caused confusion among many qatar residents.
American universities with campuses in Qatar, including Texas A&M University, Northwestern University, and Georgetown University, responded to the embassy proclamation. Texas A&M University ordered an evacuation of its building, while Northwestern university and Georgetown University gave students and staff the option to go home.
The American School in Qatar, currently not in session, closed its campus and canceled summer camps until further notice.
What’s next
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing monitoring of regional tensions and potential threats. Further announcements are expected from both Qatari and U.S. officials as the situation develops. The role of Al Udeid Air Base remains critical for U.S. operations in the region.
