Ten people were injured, including four teenagers fighting for their lives, after a 14-year-old boy allegedly lost control of a vehicle on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday evening. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:10 PM, involved four cars and prompted a significant emergency response.
According to police reports, the 14-year-old Urangan boy was driving north with three other teenagers when his Mitsubishi Lancer crossed to the opposite side of the road. The vehicle initially collided with a Suzuki Swift before impacting an orange Kona, which was then struck from behind by a Volkswagen Polo.
Emergency services worked to free multiple people trapped in their vehicles, with seven individuals currently in critical condition. A 16-year-old girl was airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. The 14-year-old driver, along with two other teenage passengers – a 14-year-old Granville boy and a 16-year-old Maryborough girl – were transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with injuries including head trauma, limb injuries, and abdominal and pelvic injuries.
The driver of the Suzuki Swift, an 18-year-old Wondunna woman, was airlifted to Maryborough Hospital with limb injuries in stable condition. Her 58-year-old passenger was also taken to Maryborough Hospital, suffering from chest and abdominal injuries, and is reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the Kona, a 40-year-old Eli Waters man, along with a 40-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl, were all trapped in their vehicle and subsequently transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The sole occupant of the Volkswagen Polo, a 19-year-old male, was taken to Maryborough Hospital with limb injuries in a stable condition.
Queensland law requires drivers to be at least 17 years old to qualify for a provisional driver’s license. Police are appealing to the public for any CCTV or dashcam footage that may assist with their investigation.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding potential charges, but the incident has prompted renewed discussion about the age at which individuals are permitted to drive. The investigation is ongoing.
