Penn Track & Field Kicks Off Indoor Season Hosting the Penn Opener
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s track & field teams are set to launch their 2024-25 indoor season on December 6-7, welcoming a field of competitors to the Penn Opener at the Jane and David Ott Center for Track and Field.
The multi-event action begins on friday, December 6th, with the women’s pentathlon at 4:00 p.m., followed by the men’s heptathlon at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, december 7th, will see the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon at 2:15 p.m., with field events commencing at 11:30 a.m. and running events starting at 1:30 p.m.

A Field of Contenders
The Penn Opener will feature a competitive field, including Delaware, Georgetown, Hampton, Monmouth, rider, St. Joseph’s, Temple, Princeton, and Atlanta TC, alongside the host Quakers.
Building on Championship Success
The Penn women’s team enters the season as defending Ivy League champions, having secured their seventh team title in program history in 2024. the men’s team finished a strong third, boasting five individual champions – the most individual men’s gold medals for Penn since 1998.The Quakers return six indoor conference champions from last year, including eight-time Ivy indoor champion Moforehan Abinusawa. Abinusawa made history in 2024,breaking the ivy record in the 60m at the Heptagonal Championships with a time of 7.25. She also claimed gold in the 200m,setting a program record time of 23.52, and was part of the women’s 4x440y relay team that shattered the meet record (3:35.73) in Cambridge, mass.
Joining Abinusawa on the track will be relay teammates Christiana Nwachuku and [insert teammate name here], adding to the Quakers’ remarkable returning talent.

penn Track and Field Gears Up for Exciting Indoor Season at new Ott Center
Philadelphia, PA – The University of Pennsylvania track and field teams are ready to hit the ground running this indoor season, boasting a roster packed with returning champions and rising stars.
Leading the charge for the women’s team is senior sprinter Jocelyn Niemiec, who secured a silver medal in the 500m (1:12.46) during the last indoor season. She’ll be joined by fellow standout Imaobong Nwachuku, who dominated the indoor circuit, claiming gold in the 4x400y relay, silver in the 60m (7.42), and bronze in the 200m (23.97). The women’s 4x400m relay team also made a strong showing, finishing ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the men’s side, the Quakers are returning a trio of indoor league champions: ryan Matulonis, Shane Gardner, and Kampton Kam. Matulonis,a rising star in the 500m,shattered the Ivy record with a time of 1:01.22 at the Ivy Heptagonal Indoor Championships during his rookie season. He recently competed at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 20th in the 400m hurdles.
Gardner etched his name in the program’s history books by breaking the record in the 60m hurdles,clocking in first at the Ivy Heptagonal Championships with a time of 7.83. kampton Kam soared to victory in the high jump, clearing an impressive 2.18m (7′ 1.75″) at the league championships to claim his first gold medal as a Quaker.
The Quakers will kick off their season at the Penn Select meet on January 11th, followed by the Quaker Invitational on January 17th and 18th, both held at the state-of-the-art Ott Center. the team will then compete in the Penn 10 Elite on January 25th before heading to the Penn State National on January 31st and February 1st.the Ott Center, a 73,000-square foot facility on River fields Drive, is a testament to Penn’s commitment to track and field excellence. Designed to maximize natural light, the building features expansive windows overlooking the Schuylkill River, creating a stunning backdrop for competition. The facility boasts a banked 200-meter running track, multiple runways for jumping events, an eight-lane infield, and a dedicated throwing area. With seating for over 1,000 spectators, the Ott Center is poised to host a variety of exciting youth, high school, and collage events for years to come.
