Quebec Theatre: A Return to History This Season

Quebec Theatre: A Return to History This Season

January 8, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Ô, Canada

La Bordée will launch this historic season in January with L’empire du castor (The Beaver Empire), a sweeping drama focusing on George Simpson, chief governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company at the height of its power,‌ tracing the expansion‌ of the fur trade and the establishment of a colonial political system north of the 49th‌ parallel. At a time when the past⁣ is being critically revisited, this creation by Jean⁢ Marc Dalpé and⁣ Alexis Martin will offer‌ a different perspective on⁢ the‍ creation of the ⁢Canadian‍ state.

More recently in time,Le Québec est un pays scandinave (Quebec is a Scandinavian Country) will resonate with⁢ a political climate that brings the question of Quebec’s place⁤ in Canada⁢ back to the forefront. This “intimate and political” narrative by Gabriel Samson I (Un chien en⁤ laisse qui jappe – A Dog on a Leash That Barks), drawing on theater, poetry and rap, will combine childhood memories⁢ with social reflections and a critique of cultural Americanization. At Premier Acte from February 17 to 28, the solo performance will‌ adopt a personal angle to better address the collective.

La ‌Bordée will continue in March with the same past angle. A text by Isabelle Hubert, this time, will focus ‌on Gaspésie and ⁤the early 20th century. The salted cod sound, in this historical comedy, will become the pretext for an opposition between French-speaking settlers on the one hand and English bosses and prosperous merchants on the other. Directed by Jean-Sébastien ouellette,Le chiard (The⁢ Cod Sound) will revisit a ⁢little-known part of Quebec’s past.

Also in⁤ March, Le Périscope ‌will also offer the public a chance to revisit a lesser-known part of our history.‍ L’incroyable ‌et ineffaçable histoire de Sainte-Dignité-de-l’avenir (the Unbelievable and Unforgettable Story of Sainte-Dignity-of-the-Future) will bring the east of Quebec and the 1970s back to the stage, specifically the time ⁤when a large state plan had projected to close a hundred villages – a momentum⁣ stopped thanks to the aforementioned dignité Operations. This “sociopolitical thriller” by odile‍ Gagné-Roy and ⁣Steven Lee Potvin, in the style of popular theatre,
