Canadian short track speedskaters delivered a stellar performance at the World Cup in Beijing, capturing multiple medals, including a historic first individual gold for Danaé blais.
Blais, a 25-year-old from Châteauguay, Quebec, dominated the women’s 1,000 meters, leading from the start adn fending off a late challenge from Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer to claim the top spot.
“Winning gold is an incredible feeling,” Blais said. “the level of competition is extremely elevated this season, so I didn’t really have the feeling that I was going to reach the top this early on. It’s a tremendous feeling knowing that I have what it takes to become the best.”
Blais’s success continued as she joined forces with Courtney Sarault of Moncton, Kim Boutin of sherbrooke, and Florence Brunelle of Trois-Rivières to secure gold in the women’s 3,000-meter relay.
“I feel like we are just going to keep improving,” Brunelle said. “The way we work is 10 out of 10.”
The relay final required a restart after a fall by Chinese skater Wang Ye, but the Canadian team powered ahead to finish well ahead of silver medallist South Korea and bronze medallist Kazakhstan.
On the men’s side, Montreal’s William Dandjinou continued his impressive season with a silver medal in the 1,500 meters, solidifying his led in the overall standings for the distance. Steven Dubois of Lachenaie also earned silver in the 500 meters, breaking his own Canadian record in the quarter-finals with a time of 39.825 seconds.
The Beijing World Cup concludes Sunday with the mixed relay, the women’s 1,500 and 500 meters, and the men’s 1,000 and 5,000-meter relay.
