Queen Elizabeth II’s journey to ⁢the throne began long before her coronation. In 1946, her engagement to Lt. Philip Mountbatten,later known as Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh,was set. ‍However, King George VI requested they wait to​ announce it ​publicly until after Elizabeth’s 21st birthday.

On her 21st birthday,⁤ during a tour of South Africa, Elizabeth broadcast a speech across the Commonwealth,⁣ pledging her life to ​service. This commitment foreshadowed her future role as queen.

Elizabeth and Philip married at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, ‍1947, in a ceremony reflecting Britain’s post-war recovery. The princess even collected ​clothing coupons to acquire her wedding dress.

The couple welcomed their first child, Charles,‍ the ‌future Prince of Wales, on Nov.14, ‌1948,‍ followed by ‌Princess Anne in 1950. These early years balanced family life with royal duties.
