Queen Latifah recently revealed that she and her castmates on the hit show Living Single experienced body shaming from network executives. Despite the show’s popularity, particularly among Black and Latino households, there was pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards and lose weight.
The actress and musician, known for her confidence, told REVOLT that she refused to comply. She felt it was crucial to represent women of all sizes on television, showcasing the diversity of real women from Brooklyn.
Latifah emphasized that the cast represented authentic women. The show’s success stemmed from portraying realistic characters, and she believed the network’s focus on weight was misguided.
“We had the No. 1 show among Black and Latino households, and we were told that the word came down that they wanted us to lose weight. And my instant reaction to that was absolutely not.I’m not losing a pound,” Latifah said.
Latifah suggested the executives should visit Brooklyn to see what real people look like. Her stance highlighted the importance of body positivity and representation in media.
