The vibrant color orange is intrinsically linked to Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, and not merely as a fashion statement. It’s deeply connected to the Dutch royal family and national identity, perfectly reflecting the Queen’s personal style of “dopamine dressing” – using color to project energy. This was certainly on display at the Winter Olympics in Milan, where she attended to support the Dutch national team.

A Puffer Jacket with a Skirt? Why Not!

Alongside her husband, King Willem-Alexander, and eldest daughter, Princess Catharina-Amalia, Queen Máxima watched the final of the men’s 5,000m speed skating event. Both the Queen and Princess opted for a striking puffer jacket from the Fila brand.

Princess Catharina-Amalia paired the same puffer jacket as her mother with a predictable classic – wide-leg jeans. However, Queen Máxima once again confirmed her reputation as a fashion icon unafraid to experiment. She elevated the sporty jacket with high, cognac-colored block-heeled boots, a brick-colored suede midi skirt, and a wool vest worn over a crisp white shirt. The result? A sporty piece transformed into a sophisticated winter outfit with a royal touch.

Retro Aesthetics

King Willem-Alexander chose a blue-orange jacket from the Denham x Team NL Olympic collection, drawing inspiration from the iconic retro aesthetics of Dutch sporting uniforms from the 1970s and 1960s. The collection pays homage to the triumphs of speed skater Ard Schenk at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games, where he made history in a dark blue bodysuit. It revisits timeless silhouettes and the traditional Dutch color palette of orange, blue, and white.

The Dutch royal family’s appearance at the February 7th, 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan demonstrates a continued commitment to supporting their national athletes. The coordinated, yet individually styled, outfits showcase a blend of sporty functionality and regal elegance, reflecting both tradition and a modern approach to royal fashion. The family were all smiles as they visited the Netherlands team, with over 2,900 athletes from more than 90 nations competing in the games.

Among the Dutch athletes competing is speed skater Jutta Leerdam, a medal favorite in the 1,000m and 500m races. Leerdam, engaged to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, previously won a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She has recently drawn attention for choosing to travel to the games via private jet, a decision that has sparked some controversy.
