Jimmy Sullivan, the independent Member of Parliament for the Queensland electorate of Stafford, has been found dead at his home in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

Police were called to Sullivan’s home unit in Stafford at approximately 10.15 p.m. On Thursday, April 9, 2026, where they discovered the 44-year-old politician’s body. Authorities have stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Political Career and Background

Sullivan first entered the Queensland parliament in 2020 as a Labor MP for the seat of Stafford. During his tenure with the party, he served as the assistant minister for justice and veterans affairs under former premier Steven Miles.

Before his election to parliament, Sullivan served as a long-term chief of staff to former attorney general Yvette D’Ath. He also had a family legacy in the region; he was the son of Terry Sullivan, a former Labor MP who represented the Stafford electorate from 2001 to 2006.

Sullivan was re-elected to his seat in the 2024 state election, despite a 5.5% swing against him during an election that saw the David Crisafulli-led Liberal National Party defeat the Miles government.

Following the 2024 election, Sullivan’s relationship with the Labor Party deteriorated. He was expelled from the Labor Party Caucus in 2025 and subsequently served as an independent on the crossbench. Reports indicate he faced scrutiny regarding personal issues and an alleged domestic incident at his home the day after the 2024 election, though police did not lay any charges following that incident.

Official Reactions

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli released a statement on Friday, April 10, 2026, expressing his condolences to the family following the sudden passing of the MP.

On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Opposition Leader Steven Miles also shared his condolences, stating that his thoughts were with Sullivan’s family, friends, and community.

Kim Richards, a former Labor MP for Redlands, described Sullivan as a valued member of our committee team and a great colleague during their time together in Parliament.

The death of the member for Stafford will trigger a by-election for the seat.
