Queer [Re]Public Festival Celebrates QTBIPOC Voices in Boston
Updated June 08, 2025
The Theater Offensive (TTO), a Boston-based cultural organization, will present the inaugural Queer [Re]Public Festival, a four-day event spotlighting art and performance by queer and trans artists of color (QTBIPOC). The festival, which takes place June 26-29 at Arrow Street Arts in Cambridge, marks the culmination of TTO’s Emergent Artist Residency and true Colors Residency programs.
Rooted in TTO’s mission to use performance as a tool for liberation and community-building, the Queer [Re]Public Festival aims to uplift QTBIPOC voices and dismantle systems of oppression through innovative new work. Des Bennett, TTO’s Queer [Re]Public programs manager, described the festival as a “bold, joyful declaration” of theater’s potential.

The festival features three anchor artistic projects. Victoria lynn Awkward, a dance artist and choreographer, will present In the space Between, an aerial dance and movement-based production exploring themes of beauty, joy, and collective transformation. The performance features an original score and immersive design.
Playwright and composer Cheyenne Wyzzard-Jones will present a staged reading with live music of their coming-of-age play, The Messenger. The play, commissioned by 5th Avenue Theatre, tells the story of Zanyah, a young femme chosen as the next Messenger for her nation.
Annalise “River” Guidry, a True Colors resident artist, will present three offerings: a public “table talk,” an immersive workshop, and a devised performance featuring the inaugural Theater of Union artist cohort. Theater of Union is a multi-part participatory event focused on story, ritual, and community-building.
The festival’s final day includes a panel conversation in partnership with Boston’s BAMS Festival, titled “The Audacity of Being Yourself.” Grammy nominees Durand Bernarr and diovanna Frazier will join Victoria Lynn Awkward to discuss how artists living at the margins resist oppression and inspire transformation through creativity.
“Queer [Re]Public is a bold, joyful declaration of everything we believe theatre can be,” said Des Bennett, TTO’s Queer [Re]public programs manager.
