According to Galit, it all comes down to time and overview. “It’s mainly about how much time you have before guests arrive,” she says, “but also whether your belongings have a fixed place.”
Putting Things Away
The quickest win is achieved when belongings already have a clear, fixed place. Think of clothes in the wardrobe, kitchen utensils in the kitchen cabinets, coats on the coat rack, and books on the bookshelf.”If you take a step back, tidying up is actually just putting everything back where it belongs,” Galit explains. “I always say ‘put all the strings back,’ and I visualize that each item has a string leading to the place where it belongs.”
“This sounds simple, but that’s frequently enough the bottleneck.” In many households, there simply aren’t fixed places for things. And if you don’t know where something belongs, tidying up automatically takes more time and energy. Galit emphasizes that clustering helps: store items that belong together, together. Batteries with batteries, tools with tools, important papers with papers.”Then you don’t have to think when you pick something up, and you don’t have to think when you put it back.”
Collecting
But what if you do have scattered belongings, have no idea where they should go, and guests are about to arrive? Then there’s a simple emergency solution. “Grab a crate or basket and put everything in it that you don’t know where to put,” says Galit. “That’s the fastest way. You can sort that out another day. It’s best to schedule a time for that in your agenda right away.” The same applies to loose items in, such as, the hallway, such as shoes or tennis rackets. By bundling them temporarily - such as, in a crate – your hallway promptly looks tidier.
Horizontal Surfaces
Many people feel that their house ‘isn’t cozy’ without knowing exactly why. According to Galit, this is often due to the amount of stuff on horizontal surfaces. Windowsills, cabinets, coffee tables, and shelves quickly become cluttered and that looks messy.
“Try to keep those places as empty as possible,” she advises.
