Quiet Grief: Loss & Healing for Women
Radiation Oncologist Reflects on Childhood Dreams and Present Realities
Updated June 03, 2025
Damane Zehra, a radiation oncology resident in Pakistan, finds herself wistfully watching children play in a park near her home. She contrasts their carefree joy with her own childhood, marked by limited opportunities due to poverty and introversion. The vibrant scene of children in sports clubs triggers memories of a lonely, fearful past.
Zehra recalls spending her days reading in solitude, a stark contrast to the energetic children she now observes. Her hypersensitive nature and challenging home life made expressing her desires tough. While she cherishes happy memories, she notes the tendency to dwell on unfulfilled wishes and regrets.
During a recent visit with her sister, Zehra lamented not being sent to a sports club as a child. Her sister reminded her of their family’s financial struggles at the time. While her sister now encourages her to pursue activities, zehra feels constrained by her demanding career, which leaves her with little time or energy for personal pursuits. The cost of activities also seems impractical given her limited availability.
Zehra reflects on the emotional distance she feels from her sister, who struggles to understand her lingering sadness. She questions why she remains stuck in her childhood anxieties while her sister has moved forward.
“Mere dil k kisi konay mein ek masoom sa bacha / baron ki dekh kar duniya bara hone se darta hai.”
(Within a corner of my heart, an innocent child resides, fearful of growing up as he observes the world of adults.)
What’s next
Zehra continues her work in radiation oncology, balancing the demands of her profession with reflections on her past and aspirations for personal fulfillment. She hopes to find ways to integrate activities she missed as a child into her adult life, despite the challenges.
