Updated June 11, 2025
R. Kelly, currently serving a 30-year sentence in a North Carolina prison, alleges his life is in imminent danger. His legal team is now urgently requesting his release, citing a purported murder-for-hire plot.
Attorneys for the singer claim that prison officials and an inmate are involved in a scheme to have Kelly killed. The allegation stems from a sworn statement by Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate who claims to be a leader within the Aryan Brotherhood gang.
Stine alleges that authorities offered him freedom in exchange for carrying out a hit on Kelly. According to court documents, the plan involved Stine killing Kelly, taking responsibility, and then having the case dismissed due to “lost” evidence. Stine further claims officials said he could escape and remain free after the murder.
reportedly, Stine approached Kelly’s housing area in march but ultimately did not proceed with the plan. Instead, he informed Kelly about the alleged plot. Stine is now offering to take a polygraph test and testify under oath regarding the situation.
kelly’s lawyers contend that Stine’s decision to come forward has worsened the situation. They claim another Aryan Brotherhood member has been instructed to kill both Stine and Kelly, and that the prison is filled with individuals prepared to carry out these orders. The R&B singer is pushing for home confinement, citing safety concerns and a desire to continue his music career.
In addition to the emergency motion for release, Kelly has also filed paperwork with the U.S.supreme Court, requesting a review of his case. The R. kelly legal team hopes to secure his safety and allow him to resume his career.
What’s next
The courts will now consider R. Kelly’s emergency motion for release and his petition to the Supreme Court, as the singer’s legal team works to address the alleged threats to his safety within the prison system.
