R. Kelly Hospitalized After Alleged Prison Overdose, ⁢Lawyer Seeks Release

Updated june 17, 2025

R. Kelly, the disgraced singer serving time on racketeering and sex trafficking convictions, was recently hospitalized ‍following an alleged overdose in prison, according to a court filing by his lawyer, Beau brindley. Brindley ‌claims prison staff administered “an amount of medicine ‍that‌ could have killed him.”

Brindley‍ is now requesting a judge to move Kelly to home detention from the North Carolina prison, arguing that his⁤ client’s life⁤ is in danger. The motion alleges‌ the Bureau of Prisons⁢ is attempting to harm Kelly to‍ conceal misconduct during the investigation ‌of his case.

According to the motion, Kelly was placed⁤ in solitary confinement earlier⁣ this month. On a Thursday evening, prison personnel‌ allegedly‍ provided him ⁣with extra medication. The following morning, Kelly reportedly experienced dizziness and vision problems, leading to a‌ fall and loss of consciousness. He was then transported to a hospital.

At⁤ the hospital, Kelly was ‍informed he had received an overdose of his prescribed medications, Brindley said. Doctors ⁤also discovered blood clots in both legs and his lungs. Kelly ‌was scheduled for ‍surgery and ⁢a seven-day hospital stay, but Brindley alleges that‍ prison officers forcibly removed him against medical advice.

“He was taken from⁣ the hospital against his will and against the directives of the doctors,” Brindley said. “Mr. Kelly’s life is in jeopardy right ⁤now because the Bureau of Prisons denied ‍him necessary surgery to clear clots from his lungs. He could die ⁤from this condition, ⁢and they are letting it ‍happen.”

This is not⁢ the ‌first time Brindley has sought to have Kelly ⁢moved from⁣ federal custody, citing previous threats to his life. In June, Brindley claimed prison ⁤officials recruited a white supremacist ‍to kill Kelly.

kelly was convicted of racketeering ⁣and sex trafficking in New ⁣York in 2021 and of child pornography⁤ in Chicago ⁢a year later. He received a 30-year⁣ sentence in ⁢the New York case and a 20-year sentence⁣ in the ‌Chicago case, which are being served mostly concurrently.

What’s next

The court will now consider Brindley’s motion for home detention, taking into account the allegations of medical mistreatment and threats to Kelly’s safety. The Bureau of prisons has yet to comment on the matter.
