A popular interstate route to downtown Louisville will be shut down this summer, impacting travelers, according to a report from islands.com. The closure, beginning May 26, will affect Interstate 64 West between the I-65 interchange and downtown Louisville.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announced the closure is necessary for essential repairs to the I-64 bridge over the Ohio River. The project aims to address deterioration and ensure the long-term safety of the structure.

Traffic will be detoured onto I-65 South to I-64 West, adding significant time to commutes. KYTC officials are advising motorists to plan ahead and consider alternate routes. The closure is expected to last through mid-November.

“Here’s a major artery for people getting into and out of downtown Louisville,” said KYTC spokesperson Andrea Stith, as reported by islands.com. “We understand this will cause significant disruption, but these repairs are critical.”

The project includes deck repairs, joint replacements, and painting. KYTC is working to minimize the impact on traffic flow, but delays are anticipated. Motorists are encouraged to check the KYTC website for real-time traffic updates and detour information.

Local businesses in downtown Louisville are concerned about the potential impact on tourism and commerce. City officials are working with businesses to mitigate the effects of the closure.

The closure comes during a peak travel season, potentially exacerbating congestion on alternate routes. KYTC is urging drivers to be patient and allow extra time for their journeys.

The islands.com report notes that the bridge carries approximately 170,000 vehicles per day. The closure will force a substantial portion of that traffic onto other roadways.

For more information about the project and detour routes, visit the KYTC website at https://transportation.ky.gov/.
