johannesburg, south Africa – A routine inspection at OR Tambo International Airport turned into a major drug bust when authorities discovered R6 million worth of crystal meth concealed inside a wooden snooker table.
The drugs were intercepted as part of a crime intelligence-driven operation, according to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS). The snooker table,destined for export to Australia,raised suspicions among officers who were following up on intelligence leads.
“Police are following all leads to determine the origin of the drugs in South Africa, as well as who delivered the consignment for import,” Mathe said.
No arrests have been made in connection with the bust, and investigations are ongoing.
This seizure marks another triumphant operation by SAPS units stationed at OR Tambo, Africa’s largest port of entry. National Commissioner of SAPS,General Fannie Masemola,commended the officers’ vigilance and dedication.
