Suva, Fiji – Prime Minister sitiveni Rabuka has lauded the Fiji Navy as a vital force for diplomacy and stability, underscoring its crucial role in safeguarding the Pacific way of life and fostering enduring maritime governance. Speaking at the Fiji Navy Day festivity, Rabuka emphasized that the Navy’s mission extends far beyond customary border defense, encompassing the protection of national identity, maritime security, and the collective future of the region.
In an era marked by escalating climate threats and shifting regional dynamics,Rabuka highlighted the Navy’s indispensable role in defending Fiji’s sovereignty,projecting its values,and championing peace across the Pacific.
“We will also be more vulnerable too sea level rise, to shifting alliances and to the competition of great powers,” Rabuka stated, painting a clear picture of the challenges ahead. “But Fiji will be prepared, will be principled and will ever be determined.”

Rabuka stressed the imperative for the Fiji Navy to transcend traditional roles and lead regional resilience through a combination of astute diplomacy and forward-thinking innovation. He called for the Navy to evolve into a dynamic force capable of rapid response to maritime emergencies, robust protection of vital maritime infrastructure and economic zones, and crucial humanitarian assistance to vulnerable pacific neighbors.
“Our maritime infrastructure is always under pressure,” Rabuka explained. “Our navy must evolve into a resilient force capable of responding rapidly to disasters at sea, to protect maritime infrastructure and economic zones, to assist our vulnerable Pacific neighbours through humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.”
