Race in Imola before the End
Imola’s Formula 1 Future Uncertain Amid Calendar Pressures
Imola’s place on the Formula 1 calendar is under scrutiny as the sport faces increasing demand for race slots. With the 2025 season capped at 24 races, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali acknowledges the difficulty in accommodating all interested venues.
The current contract for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola expires after the May 18, 2025, race, and an extension is not guaranteed. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, another Italian circuit, holds a firm contract with formula 1 through 2031. Monza has hosted 74 Formula 1 races, the most of any track, with Imola filling in as the Italian Grand Prix host in 1980.
Domenicali Acknowledges Tough Decision
“It is becoming increasingly difficult to organize two Grands Prix in the same country,” Domenicali said in a radio interview. He admitted the decision is notably challenging for him, given his ties to Imola. “From a human point of view, it will not be easy, but I have to play an international role that confront me with numerous inquiries from aspiring countries worldwide that enable Formula 1 to grow,” domenicali stated.
Rotation as a Potential Solution
One potential solution involves rotating the Imola race with another European venue, such as the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The Belgian Grand Prix is scheduled to occur every two years starting in 2027, specifically in 2027, 2029 and 2031, with pauses in 2028 and 2030.
Rotating races is not a novel concept in Formula 1, even though it wasn’t favored in the past. The Hockenheimring and Nürburgring in Germany previously alternated hosting the German Grand Prix from 2008 to 2014.
