US Open: Zhang Shuai Advances to Women’s Doubles Semi-Finals, Zheng Qinwen Misses Out on Singles Semi-Finals

Chinese player Zhang Shuai and her French partner Mladenovic have advanced to the women’s doubles semi-finals at the 2024 US Open, while compatriot Zheng Qinwen fell short in the women’s singles quarter-finals.

Zhang Shuai and Mladenovic defeated their opponents 7:6 (2), 6:4 in the quarter-finals, securing their spot in the semi-finals. This marks Zhang Shuai’s third US Open doubles semi-final appearance and her sixth Grand Slam doubles semi-final overall. The duo will face Siniakova/Townsend in the semi-finals.

Zhang Shuai has a strong track record in doubles, having won the US Open women’s doubles championship with Australian player Stosur in 2021. Her partnership with Mladenovic has been fruitful, and they will look to continue their winning streak in the semi-finals.

In the women’s singles quarter-finals, Zheng Qinwen lost to Belarusian star Sabalenka 1:6, 2:6. This was a repeat of last year’s quarter-final match, where Zheng Qinwen also fell to Sabalenka. Zheng Qinwen had a strong run at the Australian Open earlier this year, making it to the Grand Slam women’s singles final for the first time, but ultimately finished second.

Despite her loss, Zheng Qinwen remains optimistic about her future prospects. She acknowledged feeling tired during the match and regretted not seizing key opportunities. “Next time, I will be more relaxed and try to play more rounds,” she said. Zheng Qinwen will continue to compete in the WTA tour, striving for qualification in the WTA year-end finals.

Zheng Qinwen’s serve was a concern in the match, with a first serve success rate of only 44%. Her opponent capitalized on this, securing 8 break points and breaking her serve 4 times. Despite this, Zheng Qinwen remains committed to her training and is determined to move forward.
