Conventional Healer Awarded $1.7 Million After Car Crash Leaves Her Unable to Work

Mbombela, South Africa – A⁢ traditional healer who lost her sense of smell and taste in a devastating car accident⁣ has been awarded $1.7 million by the Road Accident Fund (RAF). The ruling recognizes the profound impact the injuries have had on her ability to earn a living.

The woman, who remains unidentified to protect her privacy, suffered severe trauma in the collision, including ⁤a ⁣fractured skull, multiple broken bones, ⁤and the loss of an eye. Beyond the physical scars, she also endured ⁤psychological trauma and ongoing pain.

The court heard how the accident ‍robbed her of essential senses crucial to her work. ‍As a traditional ⁣healer, she relied heavily on her ability to smell and taste herbs and fruits used in her treatments and rituals.

“The plaintiff’s loss of smell and taste, critical senses required for her role as a traditional healer, has substantially compromised her ⁢ability to perform her professional duties,” Acting Judge L Coetzee stated in his ruling.

The injuries⁢ also left her with facial nerve palsy, making it tough⁤ to eat and drink, and extensive scarring that prevents her from interacting with clients directly.

Adding to her hardship, the accident left her unable to collect herbs in the bush due to pain and mobility issues.

While scar revision surgery may improve the appearance of her facial scars, they will remain visible,⁤ serving as a constant reminder of the life-altering event.

the $1.7 million award is intended to compensate for her lost future earnings. This sum is in addition to previous payments made by the RAF for her medical expenses and other damages.

The case highlights the devastating and long-lasting consequences of car ⁤accidents,‍ not only on‍ physical health but also ⁢on livelihoods ‍and cultural practices.
