Lebanese Artist Ragheb Allama Criticized for Attending Wedding of Convicted Businessman’s Daughter
Lebanese artist Ragheb Allama has been heavily criticized by activists and media figures in his country for attending the wedding celebrations of the daughter of Egyptian businessman Hisham Talat Moustafa, who was convicted of inciting the murder of late Lebanese artist Suzanne Tamim.
The Lebanese singer’s participation in the wedding sparked widespread outrage from the Lebanese, who attacked Allama on social media, accusing him of disrespecting the feelings of Tamim’s family and seeking to cash in on the killing of Tamim, his late colleague in the artistic community.
The Suzan Tamim Case
In July 2008, the body of the 30-year-old Lebanese singer was found murdered in her apartment in the emirate of Dubai, with multiple stab wounds. The public prosecution asked for 2 million Egyptian pounds to an official named Mohsen al-Sukari for killing Tamim.
After Mustafa and al-Sukari’s first trial, Mustafa appealed to overturn the verdict, and in 2012 the Egyptian Court of Cassation upheld the businessman’s further prison sentence of 15 years and sentenced former police officer Mohsen al-Sukari to life in prison for 25 years. However, a presidential pardon issued in 2017 ordered Mustafa’s release from prison, and a similar pardon decision in 2022 led to the release of al-Sukari.
A Sad Situation
The criticism that doubled against Allama, who attended Mustafa’s daughter’s wedding to Egyptian star Amr Diab, coincided with the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, in light of the massacres committed by the occupation against civilians, especially in the Bekaa, or south of the country.
There was no comment from the Lebanese artist about the attack he suffered, especially since the Lebanese press criticized the veteran singer, who has a long history in the local and Arab art community.
He attended the wedding ceremony despite the announcement of his sister’s death a few days ago, which he mourned in his tweet.
