What Happened?
A powerful explosion ripped through an apartment building in Bucharest, Romania, on October 17, 2025, causing significant damage to at least two floors. Dozens of people gathered at the scene,surrounded by gendarmes responding to the emergency.
Initial reports indicate a possible gas leak as the cause of the blast. A resident of the building, who lives in the stairwell adjacent to the affected area, reported a strong smell of gas prior to the explosion.
Eyewitness Account: Door Blown Inward
A woman living in the building described a terrifying experience to Antenna 3 CNN. She stated the force of the explosion blew her apartment’s front door off its hinges,sending it flying into the room along with her and her grandchildren.
The resident further explained that a strong gas odor had been present sence the previous day, and gas service to the entire building had been shut off on both Thursday and Friday prior to the incident. She indicated the smell persisted even after the gas was turned off.
“There was a gas smell yesterday. We had the gas off all day. And it was off today. This is…” she recounted, her statement trailing off.
Investigation and response
HotNews contacted Distrigaz, the Romanian natural gas distribution company, for comment on the situation. As of the time of publication, Distrigaz had not yet responded to the inquiry.further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damage.
Authorities are currently securing the area and providing assistance to displaced residents. The number of injuries, if any, has not yet been officially released.
