Salma Begum came from Koraput in Odisha on her maiden trip to Delhi, standing on arterial capital roads on October 12, 2026, to catch a glimpse of Rahul Gandhi. She was part of a sizeable crowd that walked down New Delhi streets that afternoon as the INDIA bloc took its protest against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls directly to the Supreme Court.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and nine other INDIA bloc leaders filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The march, dubbed the “March for Democracy,” began at the Constitution Club and wound through central Delhi before police stopped the procession near the Supreme Court, where lawyers had already submitted the petition on Gandhi’s behalf.
The March Through Delhi
The four-hour procession saw heavy police deployment alongside crowds carrying flags. While leaders proposed flying only the national flag, Congress flags dominated alongside banners from left student bodies including the SFI, AISF, and AISA. Baby.
Supreme Court Plea and Demands
The joint petition requests intense scrutiny into the functioning of the Election Commission, asking the court to prevent Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from taking unilateral decisions and to establish a panel led by a retired Supreme Court judge. The petitioners also called for a review of processes governing Electronic Voting Machines and demanded the booth-wise publication of deleted voters’ names, reasons for deletion, and gender and age breakdowns.

There’s no going back now. People know that their votes have been stolen and this government is finished,
Mahua Moitra said during the demonstration.
