Raiders Suffer Last-Second Loss to Chiefs

In Kansas City, the Las Vegas Raiders faced a tough defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs, losing 19-17. This marks the Raiders’ eighth consecutive loss, leaving them with a record of 2-10.

With 16 seconds remaining in the game and on the Chiefs’ 32-yard line, the Raiders had the chance to score. They spiked the ball to stop the clock, setting up a third-and-3. Kicker Daniel Carlson was close to field goal range despite missing three attempts earlier in the game.

Coach Antonio Pierce called for one final play, aiming to consume more time before handing the ball back to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, disaster struck when rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson snapped the ball too early. The ball hit quarterback Aidan O’Connell’s arm, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton.

Confusion followed as officials threw flags. An initial signal suggested a false start against the Raiders, which would have allowed them to maintain possession. Ultimately, the referee announced an illegal shift against the Raiders, which the Chiefs declined, ending the game.

Powers-Johnson attributed the mistake to “miscommunication.” He took full responsibility, stating, “I’ve got to be better in that situation.” O’Connell echoed this, saying, “It was completely my fault.”

Replays indicated that O’Connell finished clapping to signal for the snap just before the botched play. It was the first time O’Connell and Powers-Johnson had played together after Powers-Johnson switched positions from left guard.

Defensive end Maxx Crosby expressed disappointment after the game. He highlighted the team’s effort and stated he was proud of his teammates’ performance despite the loss. Coach Pierce also praised his team’s spirit and their fight against a strong opponent.

The Raiders continue to struggle this season, but their resolve remains strong as they aim to improve in the coming weeks.
