Depression Alert: Heavy Rains Expected in Thailand from September 19-23, 2024
September 19, 2024 – The Meteorological Department has issued an announcement regarding the storm “Depression” No. 8 (200/2024), stating that at 4:00 today (September 19, 2024), a depression occurred in the upper area of the South China Sea. Its center is far from the northeastern side of Quang Tri City, Vietnam, located about 300 kilometers, or 17.5 degrees north latitude and 110.0 degrees east longitude, with a maximum wind speed near the center of about 55 kilometers per hour. This storm is moving westward at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour and is expected to intensify into a tropical storm today (September 19, 2024) and make landfall in central Vietnam between September 19 and 20, 2024.
Heavy Rains Expected in Thailand
In addition to the depression, the monsoon trough is quite strong in the northern, central, and northeastern regions, causing Thailand to experience heavy to very heavy rains from September 19 to 23, 2024. The northeastern, central regions, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, the eastern and southern regions are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rains with strong winds.

Strong Southwest Monsoon Expected
During the period from September 19 to 22, 2024, a strong southwest monsoon will cover the Andaman Sea, the southern region, and the Gulf of Thailand. This feature will cause heavy to very heavy rains in some places in the southern region. The wind waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will be strong. In the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, the waves are 2-4 meters high. In the thunderstorm areas, the waves are more than 4 meters high. In the lower Gulf of Thailand, the waves are about 2 meters high. Boaters are requested to navigate this area with caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm areas. As for ships in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, they should refrain from landing on the above days and times.
