Badminton Boom in Xiamen: A Growing Industry Amidst Ball Shortage

The number of badminton halls and clubs in Xiamen continues to increase, with approximately 100,000 people playing indoor games on a long-term basis. This surge in popularity has led to a shortage of badminton balls, resulting in price increases and a thriving industry.

As the demand for badminton grows, so does the number of badminton venues. This year, the prices of badminton rackets of many brands have increased, and during peak hours, the badminton courts are fully booked.

The shortage of badminton balls is attributed to the scarcity of raw materials, such as goose and duck feathers, and the increasing demand from enthusiasts.

Badminton balls in short supply

Xiamen has a rich badminton heritage, with many badminton elites and a strong following. The badminton hall of Xiamen Sports Center, built in 1988, was the largest badminton training hall in China at the time. Today, Xiamen has numerous badminton venues, and clubs and related industries are thriving.

To cater to the growing demand, enthusiasts have set up their own clubs and groups to find “ball partners.” These clubs offer a platform for like-minded individuals to play and socialize, and some even organize badminton competitions.

Bai Yun, the owner of Fengyan Fengyu Club, said that the club currently has over 500 players and holds about 10 to 15 games per week. “The excellent results achieved by the national badminton team at the Paris Olympics this year have further stimulated the enthusiasm of many players to play.”

Ms. A, an IT project manager and amateur badminton enthusiast, founded the HW Badminton Club to meet her personal needs for playing. The club has about 800 members and implements an AA system, where costs are shared among players. Ms. A also designs logos, clothing, and organizes badminton competitions for the club.

The badminton boom in Xiamen is a testament to the city’s love for the sport. Despite the shortage of badminton balls and price increases, enthusiasts continue to find ways to play and enjoy the game.
