The 28-year-old Nishioka participated in the US Open (New York, USA, hard, Grand Slam) last week for the 10th time in 7 years. In the first round held on the 26th of last month, he faced M. Kicmanovic (Serbia), but withdrew at 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 0-1 and lost in the first round.
During the match, his whole body went into convulsions and he collapsed to the side of the court, but later updated his social media account, writing, “The cramps were particularly severe around my lower back and shoulder blades and it hurts, but it seems like it will get better if I rest, so I’m relieved that it wasn’t serious.”
About two weeks after his regretful withdrawal, Nishioka reported that he had trained at the Ariake court in Japan. In this post, he shared a photo of himself with world No. 338 Yosuke Watanuki and his hitting partner Naoya Honda, and wrote the following:
“We are currently preparing for the Davis Cup! Honda Naoya, a member of the younger generation, is a member of the first Yoshizu Cup class, so I am very happy to be able to play tennis with him here. I look forward to seeing everyone at the venue on the 14th and 15th!”
In addition to Nishioka, Kei Nishikori, Taro Daniel, Shintaro Mochizuki, and Watanuki have been selected for the Davis Cup World Group Division 1 team competition between Japan and Colombia.
