Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen are leading the cast of István Szabó’s period drama “Embers,” which has begun filming in Budapest, Hungary. The film marks a reunion of the three-time Oscar nominees, who previously starred in “Conclave” and “Eastern Promises,” respectively, under the direction of the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind “Mephisto.”
Charlotte Rampling, an Oscar nominee for “45 Years,” and Katherine Langford, known for her role in “13 Reasons Why,” are also joining the cast. Louis Hofmann, recognized for his performance in “All,” completes the ensemble announced for the prestige production.
The film is being produced with Embankment Films aboard for the Cannes Market, where first looks were revealed as filming commenced. Robert Lantos is involved in the project, which Szabó describes as an under-the-radar period drama aiming for prestige recognition.
“Embers” represents Szabó’s latest work following his acclaimed career, which includes the Academy Award-winning “Mephisto.” The director’s return to period storytelling with this ensemble cast has generated attention ahead of its presentation at international markets.
The production’s initiation in Budapest underscores Hungary’s continued role as a hub for international film productions, particularly those aiming for festival-circuit appeal. With filming underway, the project moves toward completion for potential debut on the festival circuit.
