Rams general manager Les Snead affirmed on Friday that he and head coach Sean McVay are operating “in lockstep” on draft decisions, addressing recent scrutiny over McVay’s subdued demeanor following the team’s selection of quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Snead made the remarks during an appearance on The Sedano & Kap radio show, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the front office and coaching staff’s approach to roster construction. “I think, at the end of the day, Sean and I are going to always work together in these types of decisions,” Snead stated. “There was a lot that was going on into maneuvering that draft. We’re in lockstep. We work together. We’re collaborative. It’s him and I partnering to try to do the best for the Rams.”

The comments came in response to widespread reaction to McVay’s post-draft press conference, where his brief answers and visible composure sparked speculation about potential dissatisfaction with the Simpson selection. Notably, McVay declined to disclose what he communicated to Simpson during their pre-draft call, further fueling public interpretation of his tone.

Snead also referenced prior conversations between McVay and veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, suggesting such discussions were part of the broader organizational alignment. “I think Sean had a chat with Matthew before last night. And that’s one thing that Matthew’s definitely earned,” Snead said. “It’s one of the things that we’re working together to go through it. Matthew is on his way to, I would say this, a Hall of Fame career, right? And he still has gas left in the tank.”

He underscored the long-term vision guiding the franchise, particularly in balancing immediate competitiveness with future development. “Big picture, our vision’s always been, hey, let’s make the most of this time with Matthew and his teammates — let’s chase special together, however long that may [last]. I mentioned at the beginning of the segment, there’s no timeline on this. The longer, the better.”

Snead reiterated that Stafford’s recent MVP-caliber performance remains central to the team’s plans, noting that the quarterback’s continued effectiveness directly supports the roster strategy. “Matthew just came off an MVP season, so if he continues playing, it’s like, this is better for everyone involved.”

The Rams entered the 2026 NFL Draft with the goal of securing a developmental quarterback behind Stafford, who is entering the latter stages of his career at age 38. By selecting Simpson, an Alabama product, Los Angeles aimed to begin succession planning while maintaining contention in the near term.

Following the first round, Los Angeles retained six draft selections, including the 61st overall pick in the second round and the 93rd overall pick in the third round, providing additional opportunities to address roster needs.
