Rana el Kaliouby, an AI scientist and former founder of Affectiva, is advocating for a shift toward human-centric artificial intelligence. Speaking during a Rapid Response session recorded live at SXSW, el Kaliouby argued that prioritizing the impact of technology on everyday lives and human relationships is not merely a safety measure, but a requirement for social, economic, and emotional success.
El Kaliouby, who exited Affectiva in 2021 and now serves as an investor at Blue Tulip and host of the Pioneers of AI podcast, views AI as a tool for amplification rather than replacement. Her current thesis focuses on the belief that AI should augment human abilities and be harnessed to solve meaningful societal problems.
A Three-Pronged Strategy for Human-Centric AI
To influence the trajectory of the industry, el Kaliouby has adopted three specific roles: investor, storyteller, and convener.

- Investing: Backing founders who are developing generational, category-defining companies that prioritize human-centric AI.
- Storytelling: Using her platform to amplify the voices of innovators, thinkers, and creators beyond the small set of companies that typically dominate AI headlines.
- Convening: Bringing together individuals with disparate backgrounds and perspectives to foster new developments in the field.
As an investor, el Kaliouby utilizes a specific rubric to evaluate founders. She stated that if founders are not open to discussing the ethics of their technology, her firm will not invest in them.
Ethics and Individual Responsibility
El Kaliouby emphasizes that the responsibility for the future of AI does not rest solely with practitioners. She suggests that users exercise a form of voting through their financial choices, specifically regarding which AI tools they choose to subscribe to.
She encourages users and investors to ask critical questions regarding the development of these tools, including whether companies are addressing data and algorithmic bias, as well as how they are managing trust, security, and privacy. She stresses the importance of determining where the technology should be deployed and where it should not.
Analyzing the AI Bubble Theory
Addressing the common perception that the industry is in a bubble, el Kaliouby describes this notion as mostly fiction
, though she acknowledges specific red flags within the investment marketplace.
She points to frothy valuation
problems, where companies raise hundreds of millions of dollars at billion-dollar valuations despite being pre-product and pre-revenue. She also noted a circular money machine
where a few dominant companies invest in one another and purchase chips from each other, questioning the net new value creation in those specific instances.
Despite these market concerns, el Kaliouby maintains that the underlying technology and its applications are in the very early stages. She believes the long-term economic opportunities are massive and that the technology itself may currently be undervalued.
Target Verticals for AI Transformation
While el Kaliouby believes AI will transform every industry, her investment and focus areas are concentrated on three primary verticals:
- The Health Span Revolution: Utilizing sensors, data, and AI to advance healthcare.
- The Future of Work: Deploying agentic AI, physical AI, and AI coworkers to transform businesses, particularly within antiquated or unsexy industries.
- Sustainable Living: Applying AI to planet health, including energy, climate, and food innovation and manufacturing.
AI should not replace our abilities. It should really amplify and augment what we can do. And ideally, we can harness AI and use it to solve really meaningful problems facing society today.
