Gates Family Values: A “Middle Class” Upbringing with a Twist
For many, a collage diploma is a source of immense pride. For the Gates family, it’s also an occasion for grand gestures.
In 2018, Jennifer Gates, daughter of Bill Gates, received her degree in human biology from Stanford University. To mark the achievement, Bill Gates gifted her a 50-hectare property in North Salem, N.Y., valued at $15.82 million. A testament, perhaps, to the idea that some things are priceless.
Despite the family’s extraordinary wealth,Melinda Gates told The New York Times that she and Bill were committed to providing their children with a “middle class” upbringing, instilling in them a sense of value beyond monetary worth.
“I think it was more education like the one I received—a very medium class family where money dictated whether or not I got an additional pair of shoes that year.”
The Gates’ “middle Class” Education: A Closer Look
According to Melinda Gates, this “middle class” education involved several key components:
- Controlled Allowance: The Gates children were given allowances and expected to manage their money responsibly. They also created Christmas wish lists, similar to other children.
- Household Chores: Despite having household staff, the children participated in chores, including cleaning.
- Discretion: The children were discouraged from discussing private jet travel or lavish vacations with their schoolmates to avoid creating a divide.
Luxury Real Estate and Equestrian Pursuits
Jennifer Gates’ passion for horseback riding, which began at age 6, was fostered through significant investments. Along with the New york property, Bill Gates invested $38 million in ranches in Florida. The family also rented an equestrian estate for $1 million over six months. The cost of the four competition horses purchased for Jennifer was not disclosed.
Melinda Gates emphasized the importance of values such as humility, responsibility, and respect for money, regardless of wealth.
“I promised myself that if I had resources at my disposal, it woudl not be the kind of children I would like to raise.”
She believes that providing a luxury farm does not preclude teaching budget management skills.
The Gates family’s approach to raising their children represents their version of the “right medium.” If it seems somewhat disconnected from the average experience, it may simply be a matter of outlook.
