Rand paul accuses White House of “Immaturity” After Picnic Disinvite
sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is accusing the White House of “immaturity” after he and his family were disinvited from the annual White House picnic. The Kentucky senator,a frequent critic of government spending, said the disinvite came after he raised concerns about President Trump’s policy bill and its impact on the national debt.
Paul said his family, including his six-month-old grandson, had planned to attend the bipartisan picnic. He called the White House’s action ”petty vindictiveness.”
The senator’s opposition to the president’s bill centers on its inclusion of an increase to the national debt limit. While Paul has stated he would consider supporting the bill if that provision were removed, the White House and Republican leaders have rejected that demand.
“The level of immaturity is beyond words,” Paul said, adding he has lost respect for Trump.
Paul also suggested the disinvite might have stemmed from criticism he leveled against White House aide Stephen Miller. Paul said Miller and others were trying to silence him for speaking out against potential constitutional overreach.
“You have people that are basically going around casually talking about getting rid of habeas corpus,” Paul said.
Paul noted that previous administrations, including those of Presidents Obama and Biden, had never disinvited him from the annual picnic. He emphasized the White House belongs to all Americans.
What’s next
The White House has not commented on the situation. The incident raises questions about the administration’s strategy for securing support for its legislative agenda in the Senate, where it can only afford to lose three Republican votes.
