rangers Honor Athletic Bilbao Legend Ahead of Europa League Clash
BILBAO, Spain (AP) — In a gesture of respect and sportsmanship, Glasgow Rangers President Fraser Thornton presented a floral tribute to the bust of Telmo Zarra, the iconic Athletic Bilbao scorer, at the club’s Lezama training facilities on thursday. The ceremony occurred just hours before the two teams where set to face off in the second leg of their europa League quarterfinal.
Thornton, accompanied by Rangers executive director Patrick Stewart, was hosted by Athletic Bilbao, with club legend and former international defender Andoni Goikoetxea also in attendance. The visit to the training ground included a tour of the Basque club’s youth academy.
A Tradition of Respect
The Glasgow Rangers acknowledged Athletic Bilbao’s hospitality on social media, stating they were “honored to be invited to Athletic Club training facilities in Lezama this morning to deposit flowers in honor of the Legend of the Telmo Zarra Club.”
The club noted this act continues a tradition that began in 1969. “Following the tradition of our first visit in 1969, depositing flowers in the bust of Rafael Moreno ‘Pichichi’ in San Mamés, President fraser Thornton and Executive Director Patrick Stewart joined Athletic legend Andoni Goikoetxea to pay tribute to zarra, whose LaLiga goalscoring record was only surpassed by Lionel Messi,” the Rangers added.
rangers officials also expressed gratitude for a similar tribute paid by Athletic Bilbao to John Greig at Ibrox Stadium the previous week.
Remembering Past Tragedies
Jon Uriarte, president of Athletic Bilbao, and club icon José Ángel Iribar, previously made a floral offering at Ibrox Stadium, commemorating the fans who perished in stadium disasters in 1902 and 1971.
The Ibrox disaster on April 5, 1902, saw 25 people killed and over 500 injured when a stand collapsed during a match between Scotland and England.
A later tragedy on Jan.2,1971,during an ‘Old Firm’ match between Rangers and Celtic, resulted in a crush that caused 66 deaths, many of whom were minors, and more than 200 injuries.
Athletic Bilbao acknowledged the gesture from Rangers, stating that Thornton and Stewart deposited flowers at the bust of Telmo Zarra in Lezama “as a sign of respect,” according to their interaction channels.
