A group led by US businessman Andrew cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises has secured a majority stake in Rangers FC, the Scottish soccer team. The new company, Rangers FC LLC, now controls 51% of the club.
Cavenagh will serve as chair, while Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises, will become vice chair. The deal includes an initial £20 million investment for player acquisitions and club operations, with further investments planned.
The acquisition involved buying out major shareholders, including Dave King (12.96%) and former chair john Bennett (7.11%). Douglas Park,George Taylor, and stuart Gibson remain meaningful shareholders outside the consortium. John Halsted will stay on the board.
Other new board members from the investment group include real estate executive Eugene Schneur, health insurance leader Andrew Clayton, and Mark Taber from Great Hill Partners. Graeme Park, Julian Wolhardt, and Alastair Johnston are departing the board.
Rangers, historically a dominant force in scottish soccer with a record 55 league titles, have faced challenges as their last title in 2021. The team’s shareholders had reportedly grown weary of the club’s financial demands.
The investment expands the soccer holdings of 49ers Enterprises, which also owns Leeds United of the English Premier League. Too comply with Scottish Football Association rules, Cavenagh is leading the consortium due to Marathe’s existing ownership stake in Leeds.
marathe is a long-time executive with the 49ers, overseeing football operations, contract negotiations, and analytics. Cavenagh is the executive chair of ParetoHealth, a health insurance firm.
The takeover is expected to be formally approved at a meeting on June 23. The 49ers recently sold a 6.2% stake at a valuation of $8.5 billion, with Vinod Khosla acquiring the largest share.
“Simply put – our goal is to win trophies in Scotland and be able to compete at a high level in Europe, while laying a foundation of financial sustainability for the future,” Cavenagh and Marathe said in a joint statement.
