India Rape Victim’s Death Sparks Outrage, Investigation
Updated June 03, 2025
The death of a 10-year-old rape victim in Bihar, India, has triggered widespread condemnation. The girl died Sunday at Patna medical College and Hospital (PMCH), a state-run facility, after allegedly being denied prompt medical attention.
The girl’s uncle claims she was kept waiting in an ambulance for approximately four hours before being admitted. Though, PMCH authorities refute these claims, calling them “baseless.”
The incident has drawn national attention, with opposition leaders alleging mismanagement by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JD(U)) coalition government. The government denies any negligence in the case.
The victim belonged to the Dalit community, which often faces discrimination in India. The National human Rights Commission and the national Commission for Women have both criticized the incident and called for an investigation into the hospital’s conduct.

Police report the rape occurred May 26 in Muzaffarpur. The girl, who cannot be named under Indian law, was found injured near a road after going missing while playing outside. she had multiple knife wounds, according to authorities.
Initially, she was treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), about 53 miles from Patna. Kumari Vibha, SKMCH superintendent, reported the girl had chest and neck wounds but was stabilized before being referred to PMCH for windpipe reconstruction surgery.

The uncle alleges that at PMCH, hospital staff made them “run around for four hours,” causing a delay in admission. IS Thakur, a PMCH official, countered that the girl was initially admitted to pediatrics but than moved to ENT due to her injuries. He added that she was then shifted to the gynecology ICU because ENT lacked such a unit. Thakur stated, “The allegations of a delay in getting a hospital bed are baseless.”

The situation gained traction after a video surfaced showing Congress members arguing with hospital staff, demanding the girl’s admission. Opposition parties have since staged multiple protests.
Rahul Gandhi,a Congress leader, described the girl’s death as “extremely shameful” and called for strict action against negligent officials.
Anamika Singh Patel, a BJP spokesperson, called the death “unfortunate” but added, “I myself run a hospital and I know that getting a bed in a hospital is a process which takes time. People in our government are working responsibly.”
